When I was 6, I watched a scary movie that left me traumatized. The film portrayed a horrible ghostly apparition that flew around with intent to drag unsuspecting victims into the dark abyss. Now when I watch any horror movie, even the ones meant for kids, all I can see are these images flying around in my head. The worst part about being so scared of horror movies is that my friends often try to convince me to join them in watching one. They have already seen it and want me to experience their moment of delight in seeing someone else's fear mirrored back at them. But what they didn't stop to think about is how traumatic it would be for me ...
I am writing this article today to bring some closure to my deep-rooted fear of horror movies. By the end of it, I want to be able to look upon one with a level head, and understand that they are just movies. I do not want the fear of ghosts, werewolves and zombies lurking in my subconscious anymore. The purpose of horror movies is to make you afraid for a few hours (at most) of the dark, of the possibility that something might jump out of it at any second? The best way to get rid of that fear is by facing it over and over again until you realize that there is nothing there.
There is a little boy inside me that still gets scared when I think about these movies. I have to outgrow him. And as long as I know that what my friends are watching won't hurt me, then I am okay to join in. Just kidding, they'll never convince me to watch a horror movie again !!!
